One of my favorite songs to listen to in the car is, “Show You Love” by Jars of Clay. It’s passionate lyrics share how much one wants to demonstrate love for another. Going beyond saying, “I love you” to showing love in any form so the other knows without a doubt how s/he is loved. Here are the words to the chorus:
Living the missional life is one of action and love. Building relationships with others. Sharing life with fellow disciples of Jesus Christ. It is showing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in action, in our lives.
One manner of showing God loves another is through our actions. The third Missional Life Habit is serving. Listening and learning to another’s needs and then serving to meet their real needs. It is a demonstration not only that God cares for him/her but also how much we, the disciples of Jesus Christ care for them.
We give to another out of love with humility. It is not to ‘puff’ ourselves up and feel good about what we need. Serving our neighbors occurs in the quiet, without fame to follow. It is at times doing the job no one else is willing to do and doing it with joy.
Jesus Christ came to serve all of humanity and be a perfect demonstration of God’s love for the world. During His last night with the 12 Disciples He knelt down and washed each and every one of the feet of all of the disciples (John 13). He showed them love in action that night.
And the following three days He showed the entire world His love through His death, burial and resurrection from the grave. Jesus Christ served the Father in Heaven and the world through His whole life.
Every language understood His love when He carried the cross to outside the city.
He spoke with words that needed no form when He stretched His arms out on the cross.
By His death & resurrection the world received God’s grace and mercy.
As disciples of Jesus Christ we have been resolved by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Now we go out into the world resolved to serve and share the Gospel message with others.
Think back on conversations you have had lately. As you have been listening what have you been learning about the other person? What needs have you seen in his/her life? In what way could you serve that individual this week?
May you be equipped and empowered by the Holy Spirit today and each day to show God’s love for another by putting the Gospel in action.
This Week’s Challenge:
From conversations you have had lately, how is the Holy Spirit leading you to serve another this week?
